Biography:

He was born in Uganda in 1949, and moved to the UK in 1969 and has always had a passion for playing percussion.  As a young boy, he accompanied his brothers in their musical performances at various venues in Uganda.  Their performances were also broadcast on Ugandan Television and Radio.

In the UK, he has been involved in many styles of music. He studied the Tabla in 1987 under the renowned guru, Gurmit Singh Virdee, an accomplished Tabla teacher. Within the last few years, he has diversified his skills by learning new styles of percussion.

He studied the Darabouka Under Hossam Ramzy, a master in Egyptian Percussion, which opened the door into world music. He was also introduced to western music by Roger Watson of the Traditional Arts Projects organisation (TAPs).

In January 2002 he visited Calcutta to study the Tabla talas of Rabindranath Tagore's music. Somewhat different from the traditional talas originating in North India, these new styles have afforded him even greater flexibility in his playing.

Indian & Egyptian Percussion:

- Indian Percussion:

Tabla (or Tabla-Bayan)

The Indian Tabla is an asymmetrical pair of small, tuned, hand-played drums (of the kettle-drum type) of north and central India, Pakistan and Bangladesh; the smaller Tabla drum is made of wood, the larger Bayan of metal.

Dholak (or Dholki)

The Dholak is a double ended drum traditionally used in weddings across the Indian subcontinent.

Naal

The Naal is a double ended drum that sounds like a cross between the Dholak and the Tabla. The skin has an adjustable metal fastening.

Khol (or Mridang)

The Khol is a double ended folk drum made traditionally out of ceramic. The heads are held in place and tuned by strap tension. It is very popular in the kirtans of Bengal.

- Egyptian Percussion:

Darabuka (or Darabukka)

The Darabuka is held under the player's arm and played by striking with his hands and fingers. Traditionally, these were made with animal or fish skins.

Riqq (or Reque)

Also known as the 'Egyptian Tambourine', this instrument is a small drum with jingles. It is sometimes referred to as a Dafe (or Duf), although these tend to be without the jingles.
